The hardest part of buying a Rolex is not finding a famous one. Rolex has made sure of that. The useful question is what remains when the nicknames, scarcity theatre and approving glances are taken away.

Our answer starts at 36 mm, with a date and a fluted bezel. The Datejust is not the daring choice; it is the right one for more people, more often. Elsewhere, the Submariner earns its obviousness, the Explorer makes a virtue of restraint and the Daytona is forced to defend itself without leaning on celebrity. Ten strong watches, then, but no free passes for the crown on the dial.

Why it’s here

The Datejust 36 is what happens when practicality develops a little vanity. The date is genuinely handy, the steel case will tolerate daily life and calibre 3235 can be left aside for most of a weekend. Then the white-gold fluted bezel catches the light and prevents the whole exercise becoming virtuous.

Crucially, the ref. 126234 does not make you dress around it. It can sharpen a thobe, sit neatly under a shirt cuff or look perfectly at ease with a T-shirt. A Submariner announces the category; a Daytona announces the chase. The Datejust simply gets on with being a very good watch.

On the wrist

Thirty-six millimetres is not a nostalgic indulgence here. The dial has room to breathe, while the shorter span keeps the polished surfaces and fluted bezel from becoming too much of a good thing. If 40 or 41 mm has become your automatic setting, give your eyes a few minutes to adjust before dismissing it.

Why it stands out

  • Proportion: The classic diameter keeps a visually lively bezel in check.
  • Daily life: A sapphire crystal and 100-metre rating make this far less precious than it looks.

Watch-outs

  • Configuration: Dial, bracelet and bezel choices alter the mood dramatically; do not buy by reference number alone.
  • Discretion: The fluted bezel is recognisably Rolex. A smooth bezel is the quieter route.

So, which Rolex should you buy?

The Datejust 36 remains our first recommendation because it asks for the fewest compromises and still feels unmistakably like a Rolex. Choose the Submariner Date when tougher specification and a timing bezel matter more than discretion; choose the Explorer when discretion is exactly the point.

The GMT-Master II is the traveller's answer, and ref. 126710BLRO remains current despite its difficult market. The Oyster Perpetual offers purity with colour. The Daytona is a superb chronograph burdened by its own price, while the Land-Dweller is the interesting gamble for anyone tired of Rolex being accused of caution.

Beyond those, taste takes over completely. The Day-Date is magnificent because it refuses restraint, the Yacht-Master makes leisure look like leisure, and the Lady-Datejust proves that serious mechanical watchmaking does not begin at 40 mm. Buy the character you will still enjoy after the name on the dial has become familiar.

The one-watch answer

Start with the Datejust 36. Move to the Submariner Date only if the stronger diving specification and more assertive sports case serve your life.

Function or restraint

Choose the GMT-Master II for frequent time-zone changes; choose the Explorer 36 when clarity and compact proportion are enough.

Gold or small scale

The Day-Date 40 is the unapologetic precious-metal choice. The Lady-Datejust 28 delivers a complete mechanical Rolex in a deliberately delicate proportion.
