Seiko is easy to like and unusually hard to finish. 5 Sports, Presage, Prospex, and the SKX each arrive with a reason attached, and the reasons argue with each other. This ranking is for someone who already wants a Seiko, is tired of choosing a family name, and is not shopping a price table. The useful splits are ordinary: a first automatic versus a step up, heat versus leather, and a discontinued SKX story versus a watch you can still buy new-ish. These are marketplace listings, not boutique stock. Where a number is missing, the offer is on the product page. The rest of the brand is still on the Seiko shelf if you want to keep looking.

Why it’s here
It is the current 62MAS-inspired Prospex: 40.5 mm across, 47.6 mm lug to lug, 13.2 mm thick, a 6R35 with seventy hours in reserve, 200 metres, sapphire. The SKX still wins arguments. The SBDC165 is the watch you can still buy. Sapphire against Hardlex, seventy hours against forty-one, 40.5 mm against 42.5: the newer diver is not nostalgic, and it does not need to be.

- Not a 5 Sports: Come here when the brief is a current diver. Rank two is the black-dial automatic people land on while they are still choosing a family.

Why it’s here
5 Sports is a family, not a personality. The SRPD73 family is 42.5 mm, Hardlex, a 4R36, and 100 metres. That last number is the split with the Prospex. You get a live 5 Sports at a known price, and you get out of the catalogue without first deciding you are a diver person. Steel sports is also the answer that still makes sense when leather starts to feel like a theory.

Almost the same money as the 5 Sports, opposite object: a leather automatic, 38.5 mm, 50 metres. Fifty metres is jewellery water. It is not a shy diver. In heat, leather versus steel is not a style question. The Presage is still worth owning. I would not make it the summer watch.

- Heat: Leather against skin when the weather is doing the obvious thing. The 5 Sports exists partly so that reservation has somewhere to go.

Why it’s here
People still want it because they have been told this is the Seiko, and they are not entirely wrong. Buying one now is a different transaction from buying the current Prospex. You are taking the story, and you may not get the strap you pictured. If you specifically want the SKX, you want the SKX. If you want a Seiko diver you can still find new-ish, you already had the answer.

A Prospex diver that runs off light.

Why it’s here
41 mm across, 11.3 mm thick: thinner than the SBDC165, sapphire, 200 metres, about ten months once charged. Compared with the SKX, it is the purchase you can still complete. Compared with the 6R35, it is the other kind of weekend. I would not put this above the automatic, and I would not confuse that ranking with a moral.

- No rotor: That bothers the part of the Seiko audience that came for an automatic and treats quartz as a concession.

Why it’s here
Not a diver and not a Presage. About 38 mm, a 7S26, Hardlex, a steel strap. If this is a first automatic, it is the one that does not require you to pick a tribe first, or to pay 2,300 SAR to start. Last because the others do more, not because 459 SAR is a reason to pretend it is not a Seiko.
The current diver, unless you wanted something else
The SBDC165 is the Seiko I would take. The 5 Sports is the honest first automatic if you are not a diver person. The Presage is the dress answer, with a leather reservation in heat. The SKX is a story you can still chase. The solar Prospex and the small automatic are for people who already know those jobs. The rest of Seiko is still on the brand shelf.
