NOMOS Tangente
Tangente is the design most closely associated with NOMOS: a thin round case held by straight lugs, a disciplined minute track, alternating Arabic numerals and baton markers, and small seconds placed low on the dial.
Its clarity has survived changes in size, colour and movement because the underlying proportions remain firm. Hand-wound originals, neomatik automatics and date models feel related at a glance, yet differ materially in thickness, balance and daily interaction.

A graphic watch with mechanical depth
Tangente’s dial is not empty; it is carefully spaced. The narrow type, long minute markers and small-seconds register create a grid that exposes any change in date aperture, power-reserve display or colour. The simplest versions remain the clearest, while complications bring useful function at the cost of some visual silence.
Alpha hand-wound references offer the most direct expression and a regular winding ritual. Neomatik models use thin automatic DUW calibres, adding convenience without turning Tangente into a heavy watch. Larger date versions need to be judged as separate designs rather than scaled-up copies.
Choosing and buying
Straight lugs extend the watch’s footprint and can make a modest diameter wear broadly. Compare lug-to-lug length, strap angle and the amount of open dial on the wrist. The correct size should look deliberate rather than merely small.
Pale dials and polished cases reveal marks easily, so inspect printing, crystal, lugs and case back closely. If softer curves and a more formal mood appeal, compare NOMOS Orion; for a more robust daily watch, consider NOMOS Club.
Movement, size, date or power-reserve functions, dial edition and case material drive price. Compare hand-wound and automatic references separately, and confirm whether an offer includes the correct strap, buckle, box and papers.
A strong Tangente preserves the tension between exact typography and a very thin case. Choose the version whose movement and fit support that idea; rarity and colour matter only after the essential proportions are right.
