Rolex Datejust

The Rolex Datejust was the first model to bring the date display to the wrist. Furthermore, the watch had an important part in defining this technology and inspiring the widespread adoption of the date complication, the second most prevalent function on a watch after the time.

Thanks to its basic elegance and adaptable design, this modest model has gained notoriety. It is a watch design for all people and seasons, and its success shows no signs of slowing down.

The Classic Dress Watch from Rolex

The Datejust was first released in 1945 to celebrate Rolex’s 40th anniversary, it was the first watch to feature a date complication. As the year progresses, the dial window reveals the date. The watch is designed to keep perfect time – a self-winding movement runs itself continuously and needs no attention to wind it.

In creating the first chronograph watch, Rolex combined three existing technologies: a waterproof Oyster case, a self-winding movement, and a date display on the dial. In addition, Rolex introduced a Jubilee bracelet. This was the first five-link bracelet in the industry, characterized by a semi-circular design consisting of four segments of flat links that were bent to form a circle.

Rolex continued developing the Datejust over the next few years and added additional details that have become essential to its design. In 1953, for example, the bubble-like Cyclops lens was attached to the exterior of the crystal to magnify the date display.

Lady-Datejust 28

The 26mm model was discontinued by Rolex and the Datejust 28 is now the smallest size currently available and as per the name marketed towards women, it measures just under 30 mm wide. Its design is similar to that of the larger sizes, however, it does not have any complications. Instead, there is only one date window at 6 o’clock.

Rolex continued to develop the Datejust over the next few years and added additional details that have now become essential to its design. For example, in 1953 the bubble-like Cyclops lens was attached to the exterior of the crystal to magnify the date display.

In 1957, the design of the date mechanism was changed so that it could instantly flip to the next day at midnight. Fluted bezels became more common than the earlier coin-edge bezels. The new models included the Lady-Datejust, which had a mechanism that looked like the original model but in a smaller size.

In the early 20th century, Rolex made the men’s version in a 36mm size and the Lady-Datejust in a 26mm. There were also the mid-size Datejust, coming in at 31mm, which joined the lineup in the 1960s. However, Rolex had already made substantial changes to the original collection of watches and kept adding to it. For example, Rolex introduced automatic models in the 1940s, quartz models in the 1950s, titanium models in the 1960s, sapphire models in the 1970s, and came out with a larger version of the Datejust in the 1980s

The 2008 Datejust II was followed in 2015 by the slightly larger Datejust 41. These two watches offer the same official case size but feature slightly different designs and calibers.
